Choosing the Right Spec for the New 2025 VW Transporter

It’s great to finally be in a position where we can order new vans again — it gives us the freedom to spec them exactly how we want, instead of settling for whatever’s already out there. Over the years, we’ve built up a good bit of experience ordering vans direct from dealers, and we’ve got a solid understanding of what sells well and which features people actually want in a camper base vehicle.

With the older T6.1 models, lots of dealers would offer a “Camper Spec” – a really well-balanced mix of comfort and cost. And while it's easy to get carried away and tick every box on the order form, that just leaves you with a huge bill... before you’ve even started the conversion. The good news is VW has listened. They’ve rolled a lot of the must-have extras that used to be add-ons (in the old Highline spec) into their new, more complete packages.

Specification Advice

Specificiation Overview

Volkswagen now offers three trim levels:

  • Commerce
  • Commerce Plus
  • Commerce Pro

Commerce Pro is the highest-spec option and includes the best blend of comfort, practicality, and looks — perfect for a campervan conversion. It comes with things like:

  • Alloy wheels
  • Body-coloured bumpers and trim
  • Heated seats
  • Extra USB ports

You can also spec additional options like:

  • Rear tailgate with heated window and wiper
  • Twin individual front seats (instead of the bench)
  • LED headlights

This gives you a setup that's really similar to the traditional "Camper Spec" we're all used to from the T6.1 range.

Engine & Payload Advice

The engine lineup is quite similar to the previous generation:

  • Manual options start at 110bhp and go up to 150bhp
  • Autos start at 150bhp and go up to 170bhp

Loading weights remain very similar to the T6.1 with T28, T30, and T32 models still available. The T7 also offers a larger load length and width compared to the T6.1 but has got a slightly lower roof height.

Our recommendation:

  • If you're after a manual, the 110bhp is a great base. For an auto, the 150bhp DSG is ideal
  • And in both cases, we'd suggest going for the T30 chassis — it gives you a bit more payload to play with, which is always handy when you're fitting out the back with a full camper setup.

SWB or LWB?

The other consideration is whether to go for a Short Wheel Base (SWB) or Long Wheel Base (LWB). The spec stays the same between both, but LWB gives you more loading area to work with — great if you want more interior space or plan on fitting in a bit more kit during the conversion.

Updated VW Colour Choices

One exciting update for the 2025 Transporter is the new range of paint colours. VW has introduced a fresh palette of modern and more vibrant options — including new metallics and solid colours — which is great news for campervan conversions. Whether you're after something clean and classic or want your van to stand out with a bold tone, it's great to see a fresh pallet some colours are close to the old favourites like Pure grey and Indium grey.
